Stay Safe with Destination Safe

Destination Safe believes that everyone deserves to feel safe on our roadways. We’re committed to improving transportation safety in the greater Kansas City area. But we can’t do it alone. We need our community to help increase awareness and practice safe driving tactics.

Destination Safe, Drive to Zero and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety encourage you to keep these tips in mind this summer and beyond.

Stop speeding before speeding stops you!

Think you’ll make up time by speeding? Think again. Aggressive driving plays a role in nearly half the deaths on the roadways in our area. Even just 5 miles over the speed limit could mean the difference between a near miss and a hit. Better to arrive alive and late than not at all. Slow down and back off.

Watch for walkers and bikers.

Pedestrian crashes are on the rise. A pedestrian was killed every 81 minutes in traffic crashes in 2020. Sobering statistics! Pay attention and watch for people who are walking or riding.

Buckle up for every trip, every time.

In 2021, in the K-C region alone 41 percent of deadly crashes involved people NOT wearing a safety restraint. Using your seatbelt cuts your risk of dying in a crash by 45 percent. No Excuses! Even if you’re just going down the road or it’s uncomfortable…buckle up for every trip, every time.

Think ahead, wear a helmet.

Wearing a helmet can save your life in the event of an accident. In fact, studies have shown that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 69% and the risk of death by up to 42%. Improve your chances of making it home safely, wear a helmet, every ride!

Age Wisely

As we age, safe mobility is the key to continuing to thrive. It is essential to optimize your driving experience by becoming a more confident, knowledgeable driver. Doing so can reduce the negative human, financial, and social costs and make driving safer for all.
