WOMAN THAT ROCK

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.

Mix 93.3 has partnered with Security Bank of Kansas City to celebrate the extraordinary women who helped shape the music industry and Kansas City! Like our very own Teresa, Tara and Mallory Kay!

  • MADONNA, P!nk and Taylor Swift all bridged the gap between their music, style and are trailblazers. Artists like them show that being yourself and being true to your own vision can be a breath of fresh air to a sometimes-confining genre. Fans love authenticity. Especially music fans.
  • Esther Swirk Brown, a civil rights activist who attended Paseo high school and later moved to Merriam, Kansas, where she discovered the appalling conditions of the local black school. Despite receiving numerous threats, she continued to fight injustice and was a vocal supporter of the landmark Brown v. Board decision to mandate the desegregation of schools.

  • Sarah Chandler Coates, a suffragette, abolitionist, and progressive social leader known as the “Queen of Quality Hill.” Sarah ran charities out of her home, promoted the arts and sciences, and supported anti-slavery organizations. Sarah also led the local women’s suffrage club and founded the ’81 Club, a women’s group still in existence today.
